March always feels like the first month of the calendar year where things start to happen. March this year has been no different.
Despite the weather still showing a gloomy pattern, we have had a number of National Days to acknowledge on site including St David’s Day, National Book Day, British Pie Week and National Butchers Week. All exciting opportunities to show off what we can do at Battlefield.
Another important event this month has been the launch of our Spring menu. A sign that warmer times should be close with some outside dining once again. We have all the usual favourites across our breakfast, light bite, sandwich, main course and dessert sections, but do look out for new additions such as Spring Pea, Asparagus & Ricotta Tart, Shropshire Blue, Ale & Crispy Onion Rarebit, Sparrows Sage & Lemon Porchetta and Spring Green Risotto to name a few.
Mother’s Day prompted us to bring in an exciting new local product – dried flowers from Lynn South Farm in Newport, also home of the famous Shropshire Petals. These beautiful bouquets of varying sizes and varieties are now available in our gift section of the shop.
With Schools now broken up for Easter, we have our Easter Egg trail ready for you to enjoy, count the eggs, bunnies and chicks to be in with a chance to win a fabulous hamper.
Staying with activities for children and families, Splat N Splodge, Shrewsbury's only pottery painting studio has been on site, taking over the Visitor Centre for a day. Here, ticket holders spent time creating designs on pottery before they were taken away to be fired – I hope the participants were pleased with the results when their creations came back. Please keep an eye out on our socials, emails and website for future Splat N Splodge visits to Battlefield.
Finally, March is conference season for the FRA (Farm Retail Association). This year we gathered in Harrogate to look around other farm shops, network, listen to speakers connected with our industry and meet new associates and suppliers. It was a wonderful few days with plenty of thoughts and ideas to bring home. If you are looking for somewhere in the UK to visit this Summer I strongly recommend it.
Thank you for all your continued support.
