The warm weather continued seamlessly into July allowing us to make full use of our outside facilities as well as adding more.
At the beginning of July, we launched our Summer Menu – which you can view here. This has proved to be another great success offering a wide range of dishes from breakfasts through to tea. If you haven’t tried our Café or its Summer `menu and daily specials, please do so.
Our Summer Season officially began on 19th July as the schools broke up and with this the reopening of our Tack Room coffee and ice cream kiosk. Shrewsbury based coffee roasters Iron & Fire and Laura’s Delicious Dairy Ice Cream from her family’s dairy farm in Ludlow supply us with the very best headline products alongside our own homemade snacks and treats. Do pop in and try if you haven’t already. Just past the Tack Room we have finally opened our PYO field. Last year's very successful Pumpkin Patch has now become our Sunflower Field. A 1 acre sea of yellow has been a joy to be a part of and a big thank you should go out to our farming partners Guy and Tom Home who have made this all possible. Secateurs are available to hire from the Tack Room and you are free to cut or pull your own Sunflowers to purchase and take home.
Alongside the Sunflowers we also have our first Maize Maze (route). Providing you with a walk with a difference, our route meanders through the maize field with noisy activities and fact boards to enjoy along the way.
July finished in spectacular fashion with our annual Medieval Weekend. This event celebrates the Battle of Shrewsbury and involved a little under 250 re-enactors from across the country (including some from France, Portugal and Kazakhstan(!) A large living encampment demonstrating life at the time of the battle and a proper reenactment of the battle itself on both days bought excitement and interest for hundreds across the weekend.
As if the above was not enough, we have played a supporting role in a Summer Trial car rally, witnessed the opening of the restored Battlefield Church Lychgate, there has been the re opening of the newly restored Battlefield footpath and finally Wenlock Water’s ‘Coolertron’ robot statue has been staying with us in the courtyard providing an interesting photo opportunity for many visitors.
