Jeremy Jagger's Monthly Blog – March 2024

It’ll come as no surprise that March has been wet at Albrighton and Battlefield. Ground conditions have remained wet and the usual farming activities of this time of year have been somewhat delayed. That said things are happening:

Our first spell of lambing is now complete, and the older ones are now outside. The decision of having the animals in for too long against the likelihood of a good soaking outside had to be made and the thought of fresh grass under hoof and the occasional burst of sunshine on the back was too good to ignore. All attention now turns to the cattle with our first batch ready to calf.

The days at Battlefield 1403 continue to fly by and it is always a delight to see so many of you on site across the week.

Our Spring Menu has been well received and our new dishes, Goat’s Cheese & Asparagus Tart, Spring Vegetable Pesto & Feta Parcel and Crispy Chicken Burger to name a few are already proving very popular. With Easter fast approaching at the end of this week, the shop is now full of sweet treats and confectionary.  When visiting the shop, you will notice a display offering the chance to win a fantastic Easter Hamper.  Simply walk around our Archie Sparrow's trail, decipher the letters and count up chicks, rabbits and Easter eggs. A great opportunity for some fresh air and exercise but please remember your wellies, there are muddy areas along the trail!

Staying with Easter, we have our first pop up Forest School event on 3rd April.  Taking place behind the shop on the grass, the 3 sessions promise to be lots of fun for the little ones.  Please book via the Wrekin Forest School website here. Battlefield Bird of Prey Centre are also running craft sessions and quizzes at their centre behind the Farm Shop so there’s plenty to get stuck into.

Despite the cold wet conditions, we are looking forward to Summer and in particular, working on what we can add to the site for your enjoyment. With the ongoing success of our walkers and dog friendly Café seating area in the Woodshed, we have taken the decision to create a dedicated Kiosk elsewhere to allow you quick access to your favourite, hot and cold drinks, snacks and ice creams.  Located at the bottom of the courtyard, work will begin shortly to create our Kiosk, in a redundant space at the end of the exhibition building. Being in such close proximity to the children’s play area and the wider walking path network this new project promises quick service with a wonderful view.

As always, a huge thank you for your loyal support and I wish you and your families a very happy Easter.
