Despite the wet conditions, I have been delighted with the success of our first pumpkin patch.
Beginners luck or otherwise, our first home grown acre has provided hours of fresh air fun for our visitors. As we pack away the pumpkin and Halloween paraphernalia the patch will be turned over and the soil rested. Plans are already being put in place for next season.
Fresh air and exercise is always on offer at Battlefield and with the changing of events our nature trail foot path remains open through out the year, do remember your waterproofs and wellies in the wetter conditions though and of course there is always warming food and drink before and/or afterwards in the café.
On site we have used the relatively quieter month to improve some of our food production facilities behind the scenes. Our production units have been given some much needed tlc all ready for the increased food production needs of Christmas.
Staying with Christmas we have now posted our lists of Christmas products available to pre order. These can all be downloaded from the website or alternatively please do ask a member of staff in the shop on your next visit.
On the farm, Autumn drilling is now largely complete and arable operations will now slow down until the Spring. This leaves time for the beginning of our Wildlife Conservation works program. Here the removal or coppicing of carefully selected unhealthy sections of hedgerow and dilapidated stock fencing takes place. New fencing is then reinstated around the field perimeters. This will allow for more secure areas to keep our livestock in the future and also to protect the newly restored and planted hedgerows as they mature once again. Wildlife will once again be able to thrive in the natural habitat in our hedgerows.
