The Battlefield Site

Shrewsbury Battlefield is located approximately three miles to the north of the centre of Shrewsbury. It is one of only forty-three battlefield sites in England and Wales which is included in the Register of Historic Battlefields (English Heritage) and as such is considered one of Britain's most important sites of conflict.

The battlefield was designated in 1995 and covers an area of approximately 100 hectares. The boundary of the battlefield has been determined in reference to a series of arbitrary boundaries and landmarks surrounding the recognised core area of the battle.

The northern edge of the battlefield is defined by a series of hedges running along the crest of the main ridge between the Albright Hussey and Battlefield Farm and follows the line of the parish boundary. While parts of this boundary are currently not defined, the 1888 Ordnance Survey map shows that it previously existed as a continuous boundary.

Battlefield Farm lies immediately to the north of the designated battlefield. The eastern limit of the battlefield is defined by the railway line and the western limit by a series of hedges, ditches and streams. The southern boundary of the designated site is more arbitrarily defined, following a stream then a field boundary and has been encroached upon by the recent construction of the A51224 road
