Portable Antiquities Finds Day

The aim of this project is to fill in some background to the history of the battlefield and the adjoining area.  It aims to record and itentify archaeological artifacts found by the general public and metal detector users within the Albright Hussey and Battlefield areas in an attempt to build up a history of the people and the events.

The material we are interested in is not limited to the Medieval period but instead we want to build up a history of the area including its Prehistoric, Roman, Saxon and Post Medieval past.  The reason we are interested in these periods aswell is that by recording these finds dating from these periods we build up a history of who lived where and for how long.

The material we are interested in is anything that has been found, whether made of iron, bronze, pottery or stone.  We know that metal detectorists have been very active in the past, especially those who used to belong to the Shrewsbury Metal Detecting Club.  We would be very interested to see any and all material from the area, specifically that from around Battlefield Farm.

The first finds day will be held on Tuesday 9th December 2008 between 1pm and 4pm in the Visitor Centre at the Battlefield 1403 site.  Peter Reavill, Finds Liaison Officer for the Portable Antiquities Scheme (PAS) will be on hand to identify and record artefacts, although it is hoped that people will lend material for a short period of time for further study and identification with the PAS.  Receipts will be issued and all material will be returned.

So if any of you have a find from the Battlefield area that you would like to have properly identified by an expert please do come along to the Visitor Centre on the 9th December and you could help us piece together the history of Battlefield.
